You found the
right kitchen.
Cooking isn't hard, mysterious, or only for people with sous vides and stand mixers. This site is proof. And if something goes wrong, there is always pizza.
Hi, I'm Sage
A food nut who thinks cooking is the perfect hobby
I love having people over. I love the moment a dish comes together. I love discovering that a food I've never tried before has a rich 300-year-old history behind it. Cooking is about more than just feeding yourself β it's an excuse to learn, to experiment, and occasionally fail so spectacularly that you have to order for you and 7 of your friends. (Or just watch that happen to me.)
I started this site because I believe cooking shouldn't be intimidating. This site is where I document my journey through American food, one state and one plate at a time. Whether you're cooking your first thing from scratch, or just want a new story to tell at dinner β you belong here.
The approach
Cooking should be approachable, honest, and a little fun
No gatekeeping. No pretension. No suggesting special equipment without an alternative. Just honest reactions, and real results.
Honest reactions, always
If something didn't work, you'll hear about it. The failures are just as useful as the wins.
Context makes food better
Food is culture. Every dish has a history, and understanding it makes cooking more meaningful.
No gatekeeping, ever
Every recipe is written for real kitchens with real schedules. All experience levels welcome.
What's on this site
Three things we do here
I'm cooking the ultimate plate from every US state, DC and the territories β not to create definitive recipes, but to try regional favorites, give honest reactions and celebrate the delicious food across the USA.
- Each state has its own landing page with food history and cultural context
- 3β6 recipes per state, each with a full scorecard
- Track progress on the interactive USA map
Themed multi-course dinners planned, cooked, and documented from concept to cleanup.
- 2β4x a year
- Full master plans with shopping lists and behind-the-scenes timelines
- Past dinners: 7-course Taylor Swift Eras dinner, The Corn Dinner. Next up: a Shrek themed dinner.
Bite-sized food history, science, and culture β and the weird stuff that makes you go "huh." These live here and across YouTube, Substack and other social platforms.
- Did you know that peaches and nectarines are almost the exact same thing?
- Do you know the real origin of vampires? You'd never guess it was partially due to corn.
- And many, many more.
